Reach for the stars
Stars are hitting the books this Black History Month. RED reads, in association with the National Literacy Trust, is running the Star Reads campaign to inspire young people to get reading.
Star Reads recognise that society has become more culturally diverse and remain committed to offering books with subjects and topics of interest to young people, which will fuel their enthusiasm for reading. Star Reads realise how important it is to get urban youth excited, inspired and motivated to read. Literacy is the foundation to educational achievement: it helps develop core skills, increases opportunities and is key to surviving in today’s society.
This year’s stars include Calvin Harris, Sway, Mr Middas and Jermaine Jenas. The stars appear on a set of posters that aim to encourage young people to read. The posters, available in a set of six, will be accompanied by multicultural reading lists for ages 5-8 years, 9-11 years and 11-14 years. The posters and booklists will be available to order from www.starreads.org
Last year’s campaign featured: Reggie Yates, BBC 1 presenter, Aml Ameen, actor (The Bill and Kidulthood), Keisha White, singer, Chucky Venice, actor (Footballers’ Wives) and Harvey, rapper, So Solid Crew.
