Stockport embraces Black History Month again!
‘A Taste of the Caribbean’ brought a carnival spirit as everyone sampled jerk chicken, curried lamb and saltfish with rice ‘n’ peas and fruit punch. They also enjoyed authentic Afro-Caribbean drumming which got people dancing and even encouraged others to join in.
The Whitehill Resource Centre plays an important role in the lives of many older and vulnerable people in Stockport by providing a range of support services aimed at promoting health and wellbeing, for example help with personal care and exercise. There is also the opportunity to join in a whole host of social activities and make new friends.
“Events like this help take the Black History Month message to the wider community,” noted Councillor Maggie Clay, Executive Member for Adults & Health. “There were many older people here who experienced something new and it proves that you’re never too old to do so,” she said, while urging people to join in the fun this October.
One of the other events talking place in Stockport was hosted by the Tiviot Dale Church, marking the 10th anniversary of Black History Month in Stockport.
On Sunday, 12th October the congregation was made up of people from local churches who joined together to share their thoughts on Black History and to listen to songs performed by Offerton Choir.
The main focus of the service was the arrival in England in June 1948 of the SS Empire Windrush bringing around 500 Caribbean men and women to start a new life.
“This service was a fitting way to mark the 10th anniversary of Black History Month in Stockport and to learn about the experiences of the people who came to start a new life here in Britain some 60 years ago,” noted Cllr Sue Derbyshire, Executive Member for Communities.
A commemorative hymn written in honour of Black History Month celebrations in Stockport was also sung by the congregation. Children from local community group Nia Kuumba lead the prayers and also shared their thoughts about what Black History meant to them.
