Balbir Singh Dance Company - Decreasing Infinity

Classical Northern Indian meets Western contemporary as two male dancers take to the stage. This duet sees the two divided, as one uses Kathak and the other adopts a more modern style of dance. Gradually they come together until they blend and blur so closely you wont be able to tell the difference. Accompanied on stage by live music this piece looks at how two very different styles of dance can combine and create something new and even more fantastic. Watch a film of the rehearsal process, see the finished result and ask questions at the end to be a part of this fascinating event

Watermelon Man (R US rating similar to 15)

Jeff Gerber, an insurance agent, lives in a typical suburban neighbourhood. He is also both racist and a fitness freak. But Jeff's bigoted world of taunting and harassing black people on and off the job is turned upside down when his skin inexplicably turns dark overnight. As Jeff tries to come to terms with this unexplained phenomenon that has befallen him, he soon becomes the victim himself when all of his friends and neighbours suddenly shun and harass him. This puts a strain on his marriage and loyal wife Althea, who begins to crack under the pressure. When all medical attempts to change his skin back to his former colour fail, Jeff accepts that Karma has caught up with him. Jeff tries to see the light of being a persecuted black man in this cruel and segregated world with the help of some of some new black friends, some of whom were people he, as a white man, taunted and harassed. 100 minutes

Ray (15)

This is a biopic of legendary soul and R n' B singer Ray Charles. Growing up poor, black, and blind in the rural south, Charles learns under the tutelage of his tough-love mother to turn these handicaps into assets. With this training, Ray eventually plays his way into a major deal with Atlantic records and earns icon status as an American legend. Along the way, the high cost of fame leads him to engage in abusive relationships, manipulative behaviour, and struggles with drug and alcohol problems. This is a dynamite film for the music alone, but is also a full-on character study: unflinching sometimes harrowing, and ultimately deeply moving. 146 minutes

Do the Right Thing (18)

The film, written by Spike Lee, follows a group of racially diverse inhabitants from Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant neighbourhood as they spend their day trying to avoid the oppressive heat. Lee's film is an electric work of political entertainment that confronts sensitive racial issues head-on. He deftly blends humour and drama as well as using specific music to further amplify his theme (Public Enemy's song 'Fight the Power' actually becomes the film's main catalyst for action). Boldly closing the film with opposing quotes from Malcolm X and Martin Luther King on the nature of race relations, Lee leaves it up to the viewer to decide if Mookie's actions were the correct ones. 114 minutes
