(From the Newport City Living - Fostering website)
Children and young people of all kinds, all ages and from all different backgrounds are fostered for a variety of reasons and in many cases the child has no extended family or friends to look after them.
Their ages range from 0-18 years and as you can imagine they vary widely in their personalities and needs. There are different types of foster care to suit each childs circumstances and requirements that include both temporary and permanent fostering, respite care and supported lodgings.
While it is of course a big responsibility, you wont be expected to replace a childs parents, but to provide stability and reassurance at a time of great uncertainty. It can be frustrating and sometimes a seemingly thankless task, but also one of the most rewarding experiences you will ever have.
Most people can foster, and we need a wide variety of carers with different life experiences to meet the needs of individual children. If you are willing to open your heart and your home to a child or young person, and are able to provide them with the stability and support they need, you can do it. We particularly welcome applicants of Black/Minority Ethnic and Dual Heritage, and the only people who would be definitely refused are those who have been convicted of an offence against children or a violent crime.
There will always be someone available for you if you want advice or the opportunity to discuss concerns outside the normal working hours. Pre-approval training during the assessment period and ongoing training following your approval are provided with the option to apply to complete an NVQ Level 3 in child care.
