The Caribbean at War     

8 October, 2.00pm – 3.00pm
Ben Bousquet and Colin Douglas, authors of West Indian Women at War, give an illustrated talk about life on the home front in the Caribbean during the Second World War.

9 October, 2.00pm – 3.30pm
Southwark historian Stephen Bourne gives an illustrated talk highlighting the wartime experiences of Britain’s Black community on the home front. The talk features a Nigerian air raid warden, a Black evacuee, Peckham’s community leader Dr Harold Moody, band-leader ‘Snakehips’ Johnson, singer Adelaide Hall, and Stephen’s Aunt Esther, who survived the London Blitz.


St Lucia at War
16 October, 2.00pm

Ben Bousquet looks at the impact of the Second World War upon the Caribbean Island of St Lucia and at the contribution made by its people.

The Lion of Judah: The Italian invasion of Ethiopia
15 October, 2.00pm
Patrick Vernon (Every Generation) marks the 70th anniversary of the Italian invasion of Ethiopia with a look at the role of Haillie Selassi’s army, international reporting, the failure of the League of Nations and the impact of the war. Followed by a screening of the Italian film, Il Cammino degli Eroi (The Way of Heroes) 1936.


Makeking/Mafikeng

24 October, 2.00pm
Actors read and sing songs from Marion Baraitser's play Mafeking/Mafikeng, which focuses on the black South African, Sol Plaatje, a translator for Baden-Powell during the Boer War.

The Indian Army 1939-1945 
27 October, 2.00pm
Museum curator Alan Jeffreys talks about the important contribution made by the Indian Army during the Second World War. Followed by a screening of the BBC documentary The Forgotten Volunteers.
