'Our People Our Times: A History of Northern Ireland's Cultural Diversity', is a travelling exhibition showing the perpetual movements of peoples to and across the north of Ireland.
The exhibition covers the growth of civilisation in the province, from the earliest settlement, at Mount Sandel near Coleraine, to the present day. It shows the importance of diversity in local culture, and sets 20th and 21st century immigration in the context of the waves of Celts, Christian missionaries, Vikings, Anglo-Normans, Planters and Scots that entered entering Ulster in previous eras.
‘Our People, Our Times’ looks at the ways in which these diverse groups are represented by Northern Ireland's museums. The message is that we are all “diverse” - whether we were born here or have just recently arrived. Its aim is to demonstrate the part that museums can play in tackling racial prejudice – through bringing people into contact with objects that reflect the lives and beliefs of others who are different to themselves, and providing neutral spaces in which issues around race and cultural diversity can be discussed.
